Signs of aging become quickly noticeable around the eyes. Puffiness in the lower eyelids or droopy upper eyelids can make a person appear older, tired or angry. Blepharoplasty or eyelid lift plastic surgery can remove loose skin as well as excess fatty deposits around the lids. A refreshed, youthful look of the eyes can be restored with this procedure.
In addition to cosmetic benefits, blepharoplasty can also be used to correct partial vision obstruction in the upper lids and provide other functional benefits. Board certified plastic surgeons at MBody provide blepharoplasty to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredricksburg, and surrounding communities.
Purpose
Blepharoplasty plastic surgery offers specific benefits, which are both cosmetic and functional in nature. A lower or upper eyelid surgery is designed to treat:
- Excess or loose skin in the upper lids that can create a hooded look and distort the eye contour, which can even partially obstruct the vision.
- Fatty tissue deposits that can give a looking of puffy lower eyelids, heaviness around the eyes, or under eye bags.
- Drooping lower eyelids.
Advanced blepharoplasty techniques can be used to correct both form and function of the upper as well as lower eyelids.
Eyelid Surgery Procedure
At MBody Center, the first step in the eyelid surgery procedure will be to have a detailed consultation with the plastic surgeons to discuss the patient’s specific needs and goals. Once the surgeons are clear about the patient’s requirements, they may recommend upper lid blepharoplasty, lower lid blepharoplasty, or both. In some cases, additional procedures such as brow lift or others may be recommended to meet the patient’s unique goals.
Following anesthesia, the surgeon will begin the procedure by placing incisions in inconspicuous locations so that any subsequent scarring is easily camouflaged. In case of upper eyelid surgery, the incision will be made in the crease of the upper lid following the eye’s natural contour. In case of lower eyelid surgery, the incision will be placed along the lower lid lash line.
Through the incisions, the surgeon will remove excess skin and fat tissue from the eye area, and may tighten underlying weak muscles. In most cases, the surgeon will be performed using general anesthesia. The procedure will take less than two hours and will be performed on an outpatient basis.
Recovery
The surgeons will provide detailed instructions for post-operative care. The patient should take plenty of rest, keep the head elevated, use cold compresses to minimize bruising and swelling, and apply an ointment given by the surgeon to mitigate irritation. Most patients can return to work within a week, but bruising and swelling will take more time to get eliminated.
In a couple of weeks, the patient will be able to notice more youthful and vibrant results. MBody plastic surgeons receive patients from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredricksburg, and nearby areas for blepharoplasty and other procedures.
