Pre-operative consultation is an important part of breast augmentation plastic surgery. It is not an informational session, but creates the basis for the breast enhancement surgical plan. Therefore, the patient should be prepared to be actively involved in this process for her own benefit.

What to Discuss during Consultation

The patient should preferably come prepared to make the most out of the breast augmentation plastic surgery consultation. She should be prepared to discuss key issues such as:

• Why the patient wants to undergo breast augmentation, what are her expectations and what kind of results she is looking for
• Any current medical conditions, previous medical or surgical treatments, and drug allergies
• Current prescribed or other medications, herbal supplements, and vitamins that she may be taking
• Current and past history of smoking, alcohol and drug use
• Family history of breast cancer
• Results of previous mammograms or biopsies

The patient should also be prepared for the surgeon’s questions regarding her health and risk factors, and make sure to provide accurate answers. She will have to go through a breast exam, including detailed measurements of their shape and size, skin laxity and skin type, and position of the areolas and nipples.
The initial consultation may also include taking of photos of the breasts.
