Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is one of the latest and highly promising treatments for hair restoration. The treatment is non-surgical and promotes hair re-growth in a natural and sustainable manner.

    What is PRP therapy?

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a revolutionary treatment designed to address hair loss in men and women without invasive surgery. The treatment is based on the principles of advanced cell therapy, cell multiplication, and growth factors.
As the name suggests, the therapy involves exposing the targeted areas of the scalp to platelet-rich plasma, which can stimulate natural growth of hair. The treatment may be performed as a stand-alone procedure or as a part of hair transplant surgery to achieve more effective hair re-growth results.

What are the Benefits of PRP?

PRP therapy can benefit in multiple ways. When the patient is receiving a hair transplant treatment, the separated PRP is injected into the donor area to support healing and minimize scarring. Each individual graft is treated with PRP before its transplantation to promote more significant hair re-growth.
PRP is also injected directly into the recipient areas of the scalp where the grafts are placed. This speeds up healing and supports re-growth of grafts. The treatment also supports re-growth in the crown area where the tendency of re-growth is typically lower.

    How many treatments are needed?

In many cases, a single PRP treatment may be sufficient to achieve the desired goals. The complete process may take about 90 minutes in a single treatment session. Drawing and processing of the patient’s blood for the injectable treatment will take the bulk of time.
Reviews will be conducted typically at the end of the second and sixth weeks to assess the healing and monitor early results. Multiple treatments may be recommended for patients, depending on the requirements of a particular case.

    How much downtime is involved?

When PRP therapy is performed as a stand-alone procedure, it may involve a minimal downtime of one to two days because of the non-surgical treatment. However, in case it is combined with hair transplant surgery, no extra downtime is involved, and it will be a part of the regular transplantation process.

    Will the procedure hurt?

PRP therapy is an injection-based procedure, which will not involve any significant pain or discomfort when it is performed individually. Pain medication or topical numbing agents may be used to keep the patient comfortable during the treatment.

What kind of results can be expected?

The PRP treatment experts will customize the treatment according to the hair loss pattern and severity of hair loss. Patients with progressive hair loss can expect positive results. Those who are receiving hair transplant surgery can achieve more sustainable hair re-growth. Hair loss will slow down or even stoppage of hair loss in progressive cases may occur with PRP.

How is PRP therapy procedure performed?

The PRP therapy involves the use of patient’s own blood. The blood is collected through injections and passed through a centrifugal process. This enables the separation of platelet rich plasma from the blood, which contains natural hair growth factors. This component is employed actively in the targeted areas of the scalp as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with hair transplant surgery.

    Hair Life Cycle

The head of an average adult contains about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs. Hair loss is a natural phenomenon, and a person loses up to 100 hairs per day. At any given point of time, about 90 percent of the hair on the scalp is growing. Each hair follicle has its own lifecycle that is impacted due to heredity, disease, aging, and other factors. The three main phases of this lifecycle are as follows:

    • Anagen: This is the active stage of hair growth that may last for around two to six years.
    • Catagen: This is the transitional stage of hair growth that may last for about two to three weeks.
    • Telogen: This is the resting stage that will last for about two to three months.

Once the Telogen phase ends, the hair is shed and becomes replaced by a new hair, and the growth cycle restarts. Aging, genetics, and other factors may cause the slowdown in the rate of hair growth. Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center provides advanced hair transplant as well as non-invasive solutions for hair loss to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, and nearby areas.

    Types of Hair Loss

Hair loss can be broadly classified into the following types:

    • Involutional Alopecia: This is a natural condition where hair thinning occurs with age. Hair follicles increasingly go into the resting stage, and the number of remaining hairs continues to reduce.
    • Androgenic Alopecia: This genetic condition may affect both men and women, and is also known as male and female pattern baldness. Men experience a receding hairline and gradual loss of hair from the frontal scalp and crown. Women experience a general thinning of hair across the scalp.
    • Alopecia Areata: This condition usually causes patchy loss of hair in children and young adults. In some cases, the condition may result in total baldness.
    • Alopecia Universalis: This condition may cause loss of all hair, including body hair.
    • Telogen Effluvium: Changes in the hair growth cycle may cause temporary hair thinning and this temporary hair thinning over the scalp occurs because of changes in the growth cycle of hair. A large number of hairs enter the resting phase at the same time, causing hair shedding and subsequent thinning.

    Hair Loss Causes

Causes of hair loss may vary from one individual to another. Some of the common factors that may trigger hair loss in men and women include hormonal imbalances, genetic profile, stress, illness, childbirth, certain medications, autoimmune disease, unbalanced diet, and burns or injuries.

A team of US scientists has made a first-of-its-kind breakthrough by employing Platelet Rich Plasma technique to promote hair regrowth. The technique involves conversion of human stem cells into a unique type of cell that has the ability to spur hair regrowth. Further research and development in this area is likely to result in a new cell-based treatment to address the condition of hair loss.
Lead scientist Alexey Terskikh said in a news release: “The method is a marked improvement over current methods that rely on transplanting existing hair follicles from one part of the head to another. Our PRP  method provides an unlimited source of cells from the patient for transplantation and isn’t limited by the availability of existing hair follicles.”

    Study Methodology

The study, which has been published in Plos One, began with the scientists converting the human embryonic cells into neural crest cells. This is a unique cell that emerges early on in development and transforms into the cells of the nervous system, components of the skeletal system, and pigment containing cells. The scientists converted these cells into dermal papillae cells, which are known to perform the function of regulating hair follicle development and its growth cycle.
Once these cells were developed, the scientists transplanted them beneath the skin of immunodeficient mice, which lack body hair. Scientific research commonly uses these mice because they typically receive transplants and grafts without tissue rejection. It was found that the transplanted cells caused new formation of hair follicles in the mice. Researchers found it to be a much more effective way than transplanting dermal papillae that were directly isolated from the human scalp.
Terskikh said: “Our next step is to transplant human dermal papilla cells derived from human pluripotent PRP cells back into human subjects. We are currently seeking partnerships to implement this final step.”

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Restoration Therapy Before & After Photos

ACell + PRP Injections vs Hair Transplant

Loss of hair is a common problem that may occur due to heredity, aging, nutrition issues, disease, and other factors. Sustained research and development in the field of hair re-growth has led to a number of new treatments and techniques to address this problem. One of the most promising innovations for hair restoration is the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) technique.
The Modern Body Contouring and Laser Center, popularly known as MBody, is a reputed aesthetic enhancement practice providing cutting edge non-invasive treatments, including hair restoration solutions. Patients may also receive consultation about plastic surgery procedures. Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin, who head MBody, are both board certified plastic surgeons. Patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond and surrounding communities have an opportunity to receive PRP hair restoration at MBody.

    PRP Basics

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is an innovative non-invasive treatment designed to promote natural hair growth. A number of sports and movie personalities have adopted PRP, which has led to a faster acceptance of this solution. The treatment aims to employ natural growth factors from the patient’s blood platelets to address hair loss.
According to researchers, the growth factors employed in PRP can control loss of hair and stimulate the natural growth of new hair because these factors work quite like the PRP therapy. Patient’s own plasma is provided to their scalp through injections. The technique is fairly new, but the initial results have been very encouraging, as reported by various hair restoration experts.

    Preparation and Application

MBody laser center provides safe and effective aesthetic treatments along with consultations in plastic surgery as needed by a patient. The practice receives patients from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond and surrounding communities. At the time of initial consultation, the PRP treatment expert will discuss various aspects of the procedure to the patient so that they can make an informed decision.
Autologous PRP, which is derived from the patient’s own blood, will be used for hair restoration. To separate the liquid portion of the blood from the solid, the blood is spun in a centrifuge, along with platelet activators such as thrombin, calcium chloride, and collagen. The solid component of the blood is the PRP, which is then re-introduced into the affected site of hair loss through injections. In case of a hair transplant, the PRP may be sprayed over the site.
The hair restoration provider may schedule the injections at intervals of three to nine months to stimulate sustainable hair growth. With the first two to six months, most patients will be able to notice significant improvement. Periodic treatments will help to maintain the improvements.

    Mechanism of Action

Hair follicles thrive with the absorption of oxygen from surrounding tissue. PRP hair restoration treatment introduces platelets and white blood cells into the targeted area. This helps promote the naturally occurring wound healing process, and leads to growth of new hair.

    Cost Factors

PRP is a cutting hair restoration treatment that is provided only at select hair restoration centers in the country at present. The cost of the treatment can differ from one practice to another and also from one patient to another at the same practice. Several factors are responsible for such cost variations.
    Geographical Location
Where a practice is located will make a difference to its overall cost. The cost of living usually varies from one state to another, which can impact the average costs of most types of goods and services, including aesthetic or hair care services. Therefore, the cost of PRP hair restoration in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond and surrounding communities may not be the same as the cost in, say, Chicago.
    Quality of Care
The quality of care as well as treatment facilities provided at a particular practice may be more advanced and personalized compared to another average medical spa. For instance, MBody laser center provides state of the art facilities for non-invasive aesthetic procedures such as PRP. The experienced staff, personalized treatment, and the guidance of board certified plastic surgeons at the practice will make a difference to the overall quality of care and the final results of treatment that a patient can expect.
    Extent of Treatment
Some patients may require only a single injectable treatment of PRP, if they have a minor condition of hair thinning, or they are looking only for a temporary improvement in the appearance of hair. In other cases, the area of treatment may be larger, and the patient may require a sustainable solution through multiple treatment sessions. The cost of treatment will differ in both situations. Sometimes a patient may need a hair transplant, and combine it with PRP treatment. The cost will go up in such a case.

How this Treatment will Affect Your Wallet

The cost of PRP injectable treatment for hair restoration may be in the range of $1,000 to $1,500 for a single treatment, and go up to $3,000 to $4,000 for a set of three treatments spread over several months. As an elective procedure used for aesthetic reasons, the cost of PRP may not be covered by the patient’s health plan. However, several financing options are available to most patients to make the payments in convenient monthly installments.

ACell + PRP Injections vs Hair Transplant

    What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is a unique hair restoration technique that promotes speedy hair growth. The technique is gaining quick popularity following its adoption by celebrities and sportspersons. PRP treatment is designed to provide a patient of hair loss with growth factors from their platelets.
These growth factors can stimulate the growth of new hair and reduce the loss of hair. The concentrated plasma is injected directly into the patient’s scalp, and can be used equally effectively for both men and women. Hair restoration experts believe that the visual results with PRP procedure have been very encouraging.

    PRP Preparation and Usage

MBody laser center is committed to providing the best in class non-invasive solutions as well as plastic surgery consultations for its patients in Richmond, Tysons Corner, Northern Virginia (serving those in and around Falls Church, Loudoun County, McLean VA and Washington DC), and nearby communities. During the initial consultation for PRP hair restoration, the experts will explain all aspects of the procedure to help the patient make an informed choice.
For the purpose of hair restoration, the PRP will be autologous, which means, it will be obtained from the patient’s own blood. The patient’s blood is spun in a centrifuge, which will separate liquid components from solids. Platelet activators such as thrombin, calcium chloride, and collagen may be added. The separated solid component of the blood is PRP. The PRP is then reintroduced into the targeted area of hair loss through injections. It can also be sprayed during or after a hair transplant.
The injections may be scheduled at intervals of three to nine months to stimulate hair growth. Visible improvements will be noticeable in the first two to six months. The treatments may have to be continued periodically to maintain the improvements.

    Action Mechanism of PRP

The absorption of oxygen from the healthy tissue allows the hair follicles to survive. Researchers studying the effects of PRP for hair restoration believe that when platelets and white blood cells are introduced through PRP, it can support the naturally occurring wound healing process of the body.
Researchers also suggest that PRP can be used not only to stimulate the growth of follicles, but even to prevent hair loss. However, the research in the area of the effectiveness of PRP for hair loss is still not at a conclusive stage.
