    How to Choose Breast Implants

    How to Choose Breast Implants
Breast implants are available in various types, sizes, and shapes. The choice of implants will make an impact on the final results of breast augmentation surgery. Board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin of Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center will guide the patient through the implant selection process.
They receive patients from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, and surrounding communities.

    Type of Implants

    Saline and Silicone Implants
The FDA has approved saline and silicone gel based breast implants for cosmetic breast enhancement. Both types of implants are popular, and have their own pros and cons. Silicone implants have emerged as a leader in recent years because of pleasing aesthetics, more natural looking touch and feel, and less rippling under the breast.
Saline implants, on the other hand, require a relatively shorter incision, can be customized for volume, and the saline solution is completely biocompatible in case of implant damage. However, advanced qualities of silicone implants today are equally safe because the highly viscose silicone gel does not leak to other areas of the body in case of implant damage.
    Round and Tear Drop Implants
Breast implants are available in round shape as well as anatomical or tear drop shape. Patients can choose the shape that suits better with their overall breast anatomy. Tear drop implants are always textured to allow for the correct orientation to be maintained. Round implants may also have a plain surface if needed.
    Gummy Bear Implants
Gummy Bear or form stable implants are a recent innovation in silicone implants. These implants include a highly cohesive silicone gel, which allows the shape of the breasts to be maintained nicely. These implants are firmer and textured, and may sometimes require a bigger incision.

    Type of Implant Placement

Breast implants may be surgically placed above the pectoral muscle or below it, depending on the surgical plan prepared in advance. In case the implant is placed above the pectoral muscle, beneath the breast tissue, it is called subglandular placement.
The other option is to place the implant below the pectoral muscle, which is called submuscular placement. Results usually appear to be more natural in this option. This surgery is relatively more invasive, but results are better, infection rate is lower and the risk of capsular contracture may be reduced.
Patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive breast implant surgery at MBody.

    Incision Type

Breast implants can be placed through incisions made in the breast crease (inframammary incision), around the areola (areolar incision), under the arm (transaxillary incision), or even through the naven (transumbilical incision) in some cases.
The type of incision will be determined in accordance with the type of implants chose and the size of implants. Three leading breast implant manufacturers in the US, which are approved by the FDA, include Allergan, Mentor, and Sierra.
