EXPAREL | Non-opioid Analgesic Pain Management
You don’t necessarily need to undergo a period of significant discomfort and pain after a major cosmetic surgery, such as tummy tuck procedure. Exparel is a safe and effective post-operative pain control solution that makes the recovery after tummy tuck surgery relatively painless.
Experienced plastic surgeons make use of Exparel, which is a local and non-opioid anesthetic to perform tummy tuck and other major procedures. Exparel makes the procedure less painful and the recovery easier.
Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides tummy tuck procedure with Exparel for post-op pain control to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding locations.
What is Exparel?
Exparel is a modified form of a local anesthetic called bupivacaine that has been in use since the 50s. Exparel is a specially formulated FDA approved form of bupivacaine which provides pain relief for several days with just a single dose. In contrast, bupivacaine provides pain relief for just 6 to 8 hours.
Tummy tuck patients can now get out of bed much sooner because of Exparel. They can resume their regular routine much more quickly as compared to traditional pain management medication. Further, patients get the benefit of pain management without any uncomfortable apparatus, such as a pain pump.
Administering Exparel
Exparel is administered before commencing the tummy tuck plastic surgery while the patient is under anesthesia. The medication is injected between the abdominal wall muscles through ultrasound guidance in a painless manner. This is called a TAP block or an ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane.
Patients that follow Exparel based protocol experience less discomfort and zero opioid use after their tummy tuck procedures. In most cases, patients don’t need a single narcotic pill after their procedure.
The surgeon will ask you for a complete patient medical history before recommending Exparel. They will need to know about pre-existing health conditions and current prescription or over-the-counter medications for ensuring that Exparel can be safely administered.
Advanced DepoFoam Technology
Exparel is a non-opioid pain reliever that is powered by DepoFoam technology. It makes use of regional analgesia for delivering precise pain control. This allows for enhanced recovery during the first few days of post-surgery.
Over 9 million patients have been administered with non-opioid Exparel in the last nine years. It works locally at the target area and makes use of the DepoFoam drug delivery technology. The technology works by encapsulating bupivacaine in multivesicular liposomes.
Over time, DepoFoam particles begin releasing bupivacaine as the lipid membranes get absorbed. This prolongs the action duration of bupivacaine. The versatility of administration and proprietary DepoFoam technology enables surgical site infiltration for producing local analgesia.
Exparel can be used in various different surgical procedures. It has demonstrated enhanced clinical results.
