Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid lift, is a delicate plastic surgery procedure that should ideally be performed only by a fully trained and experienced surgeon. During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will educate the patient about all aspects of blepharoplasty, including its expected recovery process.
Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center (MBody), led by sagacious and superlative board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin, provides blepharoplasty and various other surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding locations have an opportunity to receive eyelid surgery at MBody.
Estimated Time for Recovery
Although eyelid lift is a relatively minor plastic surgery that will be performed on an outpatient basis, in rare cases an overnight hospital stay may be needed. The surgeon will provide guidelines and tips to the patient about post-operative recovery. Most patients will have to stay home for about five to seven days after the surgery.
While the patient can expect to return to their normal routine or go back to work within a week, complete recovery from eyelid surgery will typically take a few weeks. The surgeon will remove the sutures in about three to five days. The patient should give adequate rest to the eyes in the early recovery phase. Redness and swelling in the incision sites will diminish quickly from the second week.
Reading, internet surfing or watching TV in the early recovery period can cause exertion to the eyes, resulting in an increased blood flow to the eyes and a delay of full recovery. Some patients may feel somewhat overwhelmed during the early recovery phase, but as the bruising and swelling resolves, they will be able to notice a welcome change in their facial appearance.
The patient’s eyes will appear more alert and youthful as the complete results of eyelid surgery set in. With a renewed upper face look, the patient will feel more confident and happy. Amazing and accomplished plastic surgeons at MBody receive patients from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and other neighborhoods and towns in this area of the northeast for eyelid surgery.
Temporary Side Effects
Redness and mild swelling around the incision sites will occur initially after blepharoplasty. Some patients may also experience itching and dryness, or the eyes may tear excessively. The surgeon may prescribe an ointment or other medications to address these temporary side effects.
The vision may get blurred for a temporary time period, and the patient may feel sensitivity to light. In most cases, these side effects will resolve on their own, and no specific treatment will be necessary.
Aftercare
Sometimes the surgeon may prescribe pain meds for a few days to keep the patient comfortable during the early recovery stage. In the first two days, the patient may apply cold compresses over the eyes to mitigate swelling. Eye drops may be prescribed to prevent dry eye. The patient must protect the treated sites against sun exposure in the first few weeks.
