Safe And Proven Breast Implant Removal or Replacement Surgery
While breast augmentation is one of the safest and most widely chosen plastic surgery procedures, women may sometimes seek breast implant removal or replacement for a number of reasons. ABPS board certified plastic surgeons at the Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery provide safe, proven and effective procedures for:
- Breast implant removal using capsulectomy technique
- Breast implant removal using En Bloc technique
- Breast implant replacement from textured to smooth implants
- Removal of implants along with breast lift surgery
- Removal of implants along with fat transfer augmentation
- Breast implant removal for patients who are concerned about the safety of their existing implants
Capsulectomy Breast Implant Removal
In the capsulectomy approach to breast implant removal, Dr. Sundin will place an incision to access the scar tissue capsule. As a first step, he will remove the implant through the incision. Once it is done, he will proceed to remove the complete capsule along with any residual scar tissue around it.

En Bloc Breast Implant Removal
The en bloc technique was originally developed to remove damaged silicone implants so that the leakage of silicone gel during the removal process could be avoided. In this procedure, Dr. Sundin will carefully remove the scar tissue capsule and the breast implant together as one unit. This way the complete intact capsule with the implant inside gets securely removed, and no residue is left over.
Dr. Sundin will aim to use the original incision pattern that was created at the time of breast augmentation so that any additional scarring at the time of implant removal is minimized.
Dr. Sundin will Guide You about the Right Procedure for You
Your first commitment to your own health and safety should be to obtain the right medical information, and avoid inaccurate advice from any unreliable sources.
During your consultation with Dr. Sundin for breast implant removal or replacement surgery, he will explain to you the benefits and limitations of both capsulectomy and en bloc techniques.
It is important to understand that en bloc implant removal may not be the right technique in every case. For instance, if your scar tissue capsule is tightly attached to your chest wall or is very thin or delicate, en bloc removal may not be the best surgical approach.
Make an Informed Choice about Your Breast Implant Removal Surgery
Women who have received Biocell textured breast implants (Natrelle silicone or saline implants from Allergan) may be candidates for breast implant removal or replacement following a recent FDA recall.
The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery is committed to providing accurate information to patients and educating them about all aspects of safe and effective breast implant removal or replacement surgery.
