Some degree of pre-surgical preparation is required for any plastic surgery procedure such as blepharoplasty. A well-prepared patient will usually feel more confident about the procedure, and achieve better results. During the initial consultation, the surgeon will provide some guidelines to the patient about the preparation process.
Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin, provides eyelid surgery and other cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for the breast, body and face. Patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding communities have an opportunity to receive eyelid surgery at MBody.
Weeks Prior to the Surgery
If the patient is a smoker, they will be required to quit the habit for at least a time period specified by the surgeon prior to the blepharoplasty. The patient should ideally minimize alcohol consumption too for a few weeks prior to eyelid lift plastic surgery. Smoking, in particular, must be avoided because the nicotine can restrict the flow of oxygen in the blood and delay the healing process.
If the patient is taking nutritional and herbal supplements, such as vitamin E or ginseng, the surgeon may require them to stop their use for some days. If the patient is taking blood thinners such as aspirin and NSAIDs, they will be instructed to stop these too for a while. These drugs can increase the bleeding risks during the surgery.
In a few cases, the schedule of prescription medications may also be adjusted in consultation with the doctor. The doctor may sometimes recommend safer alternatives for certain drugs and supplements. Salient and successful MBody receives patients from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and nearby areas across the landscape for eyelid lift.
Pre-Operative Arrangements
The plastic surgeon or their staff will advise the patient to make a few simple arrangements prior to the eyelid surgery in order to help ensure a more comfortable recovery. Patients may ideally stock up the following items at home in advance:
- Clean washcloths
- Clean bowl for cold water
- Ice cubes
- Plastic bags for ice packs
- Bottle of artificial tears
- Sterile gauze pads
- Extra pillows to keep the head raised
- Groceries for a few days
The patient should make an arrangement for a responsible driver to take them back home after the surgery. If needed, they may also arrange for aftercare for a few days to have an easier recovery. On the night before the surgery, the patient should sleep well. If the surgery involves general anesthesia, the patient should avoid eating or drinking anything for eight hours prior to the scheduled surgery time.
The Day of Surgery
A few simple tips may be followed on the day of the surgery:
- Thoroughly wash the hair and eyebrows
- Avoid wearing any makeup or cosmetics
- Do not wear jewelry, piercings, false eyelashes, or contact lenses to the surgery center
- Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes
Any vital prescription medications on the morning of the surgery may be taken in consultation with the surgeon.
